First look at the Malaysian-spec Toyota bZ4X EV, launching in Malaysia soon

You’re looking at the Malaysian-spec Toyota bZ4X, which was seen on UMW Toyota’s headquarters. The two units displayed are fully imported (CBU) from Japan.

The bZ4X is Toyota’s first EV built on a dedicated e-TNGA platform, jointly developed with Subaru.

It packs a 71.4 kWh battery placed flat under the floor with a DC fast charging rate of up to 150 kW, while the onboard charger accepts up to 6.6 kW AC charging (Type 2 connector).

Sources close to the matter say that the Toyota bZ4X will be offered in only one variant as seen here, which is in front-wheel drive (FWD) configuration with 204 PS/266 Nm. Driving range in the WLTP cycle is rated at 500 km.

Inside, there’s a 12.3-inch infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, 7-inch digital instrument cluster, dual-zone automatic climate control, wireless charger, and a round steering wheel as opposed to the optional steer-by-wire with ‘yoke’ style wheel as seen in international markets.

Further details such as prices and final specifications will be divulged upon its launch. In the UK, the Toyota bZ4X is priced from GBP 45,710 (around RM 238k) and in Thailand, the bZ4X stars from THB 1,836,000 (approximately RM 236k).

Malaysia’s tax exemptions for battery EV models will expire on 31-December 2023. CKD models however, enjoy an additional 2-year exemption until 31-December 2025.

The Budget 2023 did propose for a 1-year extension, but it was never passed as our Parliament was dissolved for the 15th General Election just days after. The newly elected government will be retabling Budget 2023 again on 24-February.
