KPDN – Targeted RON 95 subsidy to be determined by JPJ, LHDN and Bank Negara data

In order to identify those eligible for targeted petrol subsidies, data from the Road Transport Department (JPJ) isn’t the only factor, but other available databases as well.

Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister, Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub said that this comprehensive database would combine data collected by JPJ, the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN), Bank Negara, Khazanah Nasional Bhd, the Department of Statistics Malaysia, and university studies.

He said having a comprehensive data centre was important and necessary to make the targeted subsidy mechanism a success.

“We need to gather all the data. The ministry or the National Action Council on Cost of Living (NACCOL) should look at all the data before we make a final decision,” Salahuddin said.

If the targeted subsidy is determined by engine size, then this GLA 200 could qualify with its 1.3-litre turbo unit

This follows comments on economists’ views that granting targeted petrol subsidies based on the cubic capacity (cc) of vehicle engines was not very appropriate. Some premium automakers offer smaller turbocharged engines in their line-up.

Previously, it was reported that the JPJ database can be used for the RON 95 petrol subsidy scheme as the government can identify those eligible based on the engine capacity or horsepower of vehicles.
