Enhance Your Smile with Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is popularizing more and more because aesthetics has gained a lot of value. Nowadays, there are cosmetic ways to straightening your teeth. People prefer clear braces to the traditional ones. The reason for it is that they don’t show!

With the color of your teeth, it happens the same. Many patients visit our dentist in South Edmonton, asking for ways to improve it. Luckily, we offer different treatments to enhance the appearance of your dentition.

In this blog, our cosmetic dentist near you will talk about teeth whitening.

What is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental procedure that consists of improving the shade of your dental pieces. Teeth are not naturally white. The following factors affect its color:

  1. Dentin – The enamel is translucent, and it shows the color of the underlying dentin. Depending on each person, it will be yellower.
  2. Aging – As you get older, the enamel wears away, and the dentin shows more. Same as before, if your dentin is darker, you will show darker teeth.
  3. Diet – The dentin absorbs the pigments of the things you eat and drink. It is usual to see people that drink too much coffee and eat chocolate with darker teeth. We recommend avoiding colored foods and drinks.
  4. Medicaments – Some agents, like antibiotics (Tetracycline), stain your dental pieces. If it is your case, you can look for teeth whitening near you.
  5. Caries – Severe decay can stain your teeth, for example, when it hurts your nerve.

What to Expect of the Procedure?

We offer teeth whitening in South Edmonton to enhance the color of your teeth in a single appointment. First, our doctor will evaluate you and take pictures for before/after references. Then, they will retract your lips and add a resin over the gums to protect them (the bleaching agent burns them).

Afterward, they will use hydrogen peroxide to whiten your teeth. Your dentist will paint each tooth with a pen or a brush and let it act for thirty minutes. After this time, they will wash it and add another application.

After another thirty minutes, they will wash and dry the product. Your doctor may add a desensitizing agent for tooth soreness and may prescribe you one of these for at-home usage.

How Long Does Teeth Whitening Last?

Teeth whitening can last from three months to two years. It will depend on each case.

The lifestyle of the patient has an impact on the results. For example, if a patient is a heavy smoker and drinks lots of coffee and does not brush their teeth, logically, the treatment will not last long. You will have to get a touch-up after a short time.

However, if you take excellent care of your dentition and watch your diet, you can enjoy your teeth whitening for a couple of years and even more.

What You Must Do

For better results, we advise you to keep up with the basics of oral care. These are the following:

  1. Brush your teeth – twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. The brushing must last two minutes (at least).
  2. Floss daily – To remove dental plaque from between your dentition, use dental floss or interdental brushes. Water flossers are an excellent option as well.
  3. Avoid sugary snacks – Besides pigmented foods and drinks, avoid these because they increase the risk of developing cavities.
  4. Visit your dentist – The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends a biannual visit (every six months) for excellent oral health.

By following these instructions, your smile will remain healthy and beautiful!
