Work and holiday, how does it work?

Public holidays are not necessarily days off for employees. An employer can ask his staff to come to work on a normal public holiday.  Collective agreements can exist in this sense. Failing agreement, it is the employer who sets the public holidays and non-working days. On the other hand, in the event of a public holiday, the employee does not have to make up the hours of work not worked. Only May 1st is compulsory except for a few sectors (hospitals, public transport, etc.).

Are public holidays paid?

A non-working public holiday is remunerated like any working day if the employee has at least 3 months of seniority in the company. Only May 1 is paid for all employees, even if it is a non-working day, regardless of the date of entry into the company. An employee working on a public holiday is not entitled to an increase, unless this is provided for by a collective agreement.

Working days, what are they?

The difference between working days and working days is quite simple to understand. Business days correspond to the days which are normally worked in terms of the legislation in force. They therefore include all days of the week, with the exception of Sundays and public holidays.

On the other hand, the working days correspond to the reality of the company. These are the days when the company is actually in operation. They are staggered in most cases from Monday to Friday. However, many businesses also open on Saturdays and therefore consider this day as a working day and not just as a working day. Thus, in most cases, there are five working days per week (Monday to Friday), while there are six working days (Monday to Saturday, excluding public holidays that fall within the period).
