How Does Lifestyle Affect Fertility

Conceiving a child or being parents is different for different couples. Some couples succeed in expanding their family as they wish while others have to struggle a lot and need medical intervention. As per the experts, many factors affect fertility in males and females. And lifestyle is one of those factors. Here are some bad lifestyle habits that can affect your fertility:        

Weight 

Your weight has a direct link with your general as well as reproductive health. Being underweight or overweight can make you (female) have irregular periods or a stop in periods. Getting pregnant will be very difficult if it occurs to you. Further, it can make you have hormonal imbalances and increase your risk of having type 2 diabetes that can lead you to have pregnancy complications if you conceive anyhow. 

 As a male, being underweight or overweight is harmful for your reproductive health. It can make you have hormonal issues that can affect your sperm count and quality. You can make your female partner pregnant when your sperm is normal in terms of number, shape, and motility. 

As a couple, you need to control your weight if you wish to become parents or expand your family. For it, you need to keep a close watch on your weight and try to lose it when you gain weight or increase your weight if you are underweight. Checking your BMI frequently can help you. Your BMI should be between 20 and 25, but not more than 30.  

Eating 

In the current world, most people do not pay attention to the quality of food they eat. Due to lack of time, they frequently eat outside of their home and avoid cooking food. Regular eating fast, junk, spicy, or processed foods is not good for your general and reproductive health. It can make you obesy and create several issues.

As a couple, you should value eating healthy foods. Your diet must have all the nutritional elements like carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals. It is possible when you will include seasonal vegetables, fruits, whole grains, pasteurised dairy products, nuts, seeds, and dry fruits in your diet. As far as possible, you should focus on a fertility-friendly diet. You can talk to your doctor about it.    

Exercise 

Many people are not physically active. As a couple, being physically active is crucial for you, especially when you are trying to conceive a child. Your physical activity helps you manage your weight, have good blood flow throughout your body, release your body tension, and enhance your body function. You should go for a morning or evening walk of around 30 minutes a day if you can’t perform intensive workouts.  

Drinking and smoking 

Drinking alcoholic beverages is common in today’s people of any age or community. Too much and frequent drinking can lead you (couples) to have infertility. As a male partner, you can experience a decrease in your sperm quality and quantity. Both of you avoid drinking as you plan to become parents or move on your parenthood journey.      

Like drinking, smoking is harmful to your reproductive health. It triggers your risk of having more than 50 chronic health issues and can lower your fertility. Apart from affecting sperm quality in men, it makes females have miscarriages, preterm births, and stillbirths (ectopic pregnancies). It is better for you (couples) to quit smoking at least three months before moving ahead in your family expansion plan with or without medical intervention.  

Sexual health 

From the ancient times, having sex outside married life has been common. Physical intimacy with multiple partners is not good for anyone for their general as well as reproductive health. Sex with more than one partner can lead you to have STD or sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrohea, chlamydia and syphilis. If not diagnosed and treated soon, these diseases can leave a bad impact on your fertility. As a female, you can’t conceive t=due to scars or infections in your reproductive organs caused by STDs.    

Sleep and stress 

Bad sleeping habits or lack of good quality sleep can make you feel tired or irritable even after leaving your bed in the morning. It may not harm your general in the initial days. However, it can interrupt the production and release of reproductive hormones that can make you infertile. Further, you should avoid stress. Following a good sleeping routine and practising meditation or deep breathing can help you maintain your fertility.

Bad lifestyle is one of prominent causes of infertility in men and women. As a couple of reproductive age, you should follow a healthy lifestyle if you are serious about being parents of a child.
